a 4 yo is tough because they grow soo fast. My boys outgrew their gear long before they wore it out. Some of the things we bought them for Christmas didn't fit by the time it was warm enough to ride.

We had good luck with O'Neal jersey and pants and had good luck with Fox's youth boots.

We have had a couple Leatt Adventure vest/neck braces and they did their job very well. It was not very cool in the hot summer due to its material construction, but a chest protector/neck brace built together was a good product for us.

My wife managed the local Cycle Gear for a while, so we had access to good discounts on kids gear. We tried a lot more than we would have if we paid full price.

Yea I worry about the sizing, I want him to have boots but they are expensive to be outgrowing every little bit. I get very nervous not riding with boots since I broke my leg. Jersey and riding pants aren't as important to me as he can wear jeans and a play shirt if needed but I know kids like the look cool stuff too. I plan to look for the neck brace and chest protector and hopefully some boots. I figure with young kids used boots are ok as they can't get much use.
